Reasons for exchange or removal
An implant exchange replaces old implants with new ones; a removal takes them out without replacement. Both procedures take around one to two hours under general anaesthetic, usually through the old scar.

Exchange, removal or either with a lift?
In an exchange the old implant is removed and replaced with a new one – in the same size or with a different volume. With a removal the breast remains without an implant; depending on the tissue, a lift or fat transfer is then advisable. Switching to a smaller implant is technically more demanding than expected and usually requires a lift.

There is no flat starting price for an implant exchange, because the work depends heavily on whether the capsule is removed, a lift performed or fat transferred. You receive a written quotation after the examination. For comparison: breast lift from €6,500, implants from €1,000.

Frequently asked questions about implant exchange
When is an implant exchange necessary?
With capsular contracture, implant failure, displacement or when size and shape no longer match your wishes. Modern implants are durable; in some cases an exchange makes sense after around 10 to 20 years.
Can I have the implants removed altogether?
Yes. Depending on the tissue, a lift or fat transfer afterwards can help the breasts keep their shape.
Can I switch to smaller implants without a lift?
Usually not. The skin has adapted to the larger volume; without a lift the breasts would often sag. Shape comes before the scar.
Will there be new scars?
In most cases the incision is made in the same place as for the original operation. New scars only arise if a lift is added.
How long does the procedure take?
Around one to two hours under general anaesthetic, longer with a lift.
How much does an implant exchange cost?
The price depends on whether the implants are only exchanged, removed or combined with a lift. You receive a written quotation after the examination.
When can I return to work?
Desk work after a few days; we recommend taking about a week off.
When can I exercise again?
Endurance sport after about four weeks, strength training after about six weeks.
