What is gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is an enlargement of the male chest caused by excess glandular tissue (true gynaecomastia), by fat (pseudogynaecomastia) or by a mixture of both; it is treated with liposuction, combined with removal of the gland where glandular tissue is present.
Hormonal changes, genetics or fluctuations in weight can cause the male chest to enlarge. Exercise and diet sometimes help with pure fat, but not with glandular tissue — chest training can even make it look worse, because the muscle pushes the tissue forward.
The procedure is not about losing weight but about correcting a chest shape that bothers you. The goal is a natural, flat chest contour that suits your build.
The examination determines the method
At the first consultation we examine the chest by touch and distinguish whether it is mainly fat or a firm glandular body behind the nipple. This determines whether liposuction is enough or whether the gland must also be removed.

Fat or gland: two forms, two approaches
With pure fat, gentle liposuction through access points a few millimetres in size is enough. If glandular tissue is present, it is removed through a small, inconspicuous incision at the edge of the areola — in the same procedure, together with the liposuction.

Consultation, preparation, surgery and aftercare all take place in the same building. If you wish, surgery can usually take place just a few weeks after the consultation.

Analysis of the problem areas, assessment of skin and connective tissue, treatment plan and written quote.
- Pre-op talk and safety check
Surgical plan, instructions, anaesthesia consultation and blood test. The results form the basis for clearance for surgery.
- Marking and surgery
Around ten minutes of marking while standing, then surgery in our own theatre suite – for as long as it takes to get the result right.
- Going home and recovering
Usually home the same day, one night with us after larger procedures. Showering from day one, desk work after two to four days.

Frequently asked questions about gynaecomastia
What is the difference between true gynaecomastia and pseudogynaecomastia?
In true gynaecomastia the glandular tissue is enlarged; in pseudogynaecomastia it is mainly fat. Often it is a mixture. The examination at the first consultation shows which form is present.
Is gynaecomastia treatment painful?
The procedure is performed under twilight sedation or local anaesthesia, and you feel no pain during it. Slight discomfort is possible in the first few days and is easily managed.
Will there be scars?
The liposuction access points are a few millimetres in size. If the gland has to be removed, a small incision at the edge of the areola is added, which is barely noticeable once healed.
Do I have to stay overnight?
Usually not. After a short period of monitoring you go home; for larger procedures we recommend a night with us.
When can I go back to work?
Desk work is usually possible after two to four days. The compression garment can be worn under a shirt.
When can I train again?
You can start exercising from two weeks, depending on the area. Wait with chest training until we clear it at your check-up.
Can the enlarged chest come back?
Glandular tissue and fat that have been removed do not grow back. With major weight gain the remaining fat cells can grow; a stable weight supports the result.
When will I see the final result?
Swelling is normal in the first weeks. The final result shows after three to six months.
