Cryolipolysis: reducing fat deposits with cold
Cryolipolysis is a very gentle method of reducing fat deposits on various parts of the body. Fat cells are damaged by local cold so that they die and are gradually broken down, without injuring the skin or the surrounding tissue. At the Kuzbari Centre we use the original CoolSculpting device for this.
- Around 35 minutes per cycle
- Non-invasive
- Freeze-detect protection
- Result after around three months
At the consultation we establish whether cold treatment suits you.
What is the difference between cryolipolysis and CoolSculpting?
Cryolipolysis is the general term for targeted cold treatment of unwanted fat deposits. CoolSculpting is the device we use to carry out this treatment: it delivers convincing results, it is very safe to use, and six different applicators are used depending on the body area.
The term combines “cryo” for cold and “lipolysis” for the breakdown of fat.

How long has cryolipolysis existed?
Cryolipolysis has been in use since 2010. In that year the Californian company ZELTIQ became the first in the world to receive approval from the US FDA for its CoolSculpting device, which destroys fat cells with cold. Approval in the EU as a Class IIa medical device followed shortly afterwards.
- Wellman Center, Boston
Dermatologists at Massachusetts General Hospital discover that fat cells are more sensitive to cold than other tissues.
- Basic research completed
The research gives rise to the company ZELTIQ, which proves the effectiveness clinically.
- FDA approval
CoolSculpting is approved in the USA and shortly afterwards in the EU as a Class IIa medical device.
- One of the first users in Austria
We tested the method early on and have treated with the original device ever since.
What advantages does cryolipolysis have over liposuction?
Compared with liposuction, cryolipolysis is a gentle, non-invasive method: there is no operation, no scar and no downtime. You are fully fit straight after the treatment. Liposuction, on the other hand, removes considerably more fat in one session and is suited to larger amounts.
| Feature | Cryolipolysis | Liposuction |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Cold from outside, no incision | Operation with cannulas |
| Anaesthesia | None | Yes, depending on findings |
| Downtime | None | A few days |
| Suited to | Smaller, defined deposits | Larger amounts of fat, precise contouring |
| Cost | €370 – 550 per cycle | e.g. abdomen €4,600 – 7,900 |
Which body areas can be treated?
The six applicators of the CoolSculpting system can treat every part of the body where stubborn fat deposits occur, from the thighs to the upper arms. The new CoolAdvantage applicators are more comfortable and cut treatment time by almost half compared with earlier models. At the Kuzbari Centre we usually treat a double chin with liposuction.
How long does a treatment take?
In most cases a cryolipolysis treatment at the Kuzbari Centre takes around 35 minutes per cycle. This is made possible by the latest applicators, which have considerably shortened treatment time compared with earlier models.
During the cooling you can read, work on a laptop or simply rest.
How safe is cryolipolysis with CoolSculpting?
With its freeze-detect technology the CoolSculpting system prevents unwanted side effects: sensors ensure that the skin and deeper tissue layers do not suffer frostbite. In addition, a thin protective pad lies between the cooling element and the skin.
- Treatment only with the original, tested and approved CoolSculpting device
- Sensors monitor the temperature at the skin throughout the cycle
- Protective pad between applicator and skin
- Planning, information and check-ups by doctors
Who is cryolipolysis suitable for?
Cryolipolysis is suitable for women and men who have stubborn fat deposits despite a balanced diet and exercise. It is not a remedy for excess weight but serves body contouring for clear outlines.
When are the first results visible?
The first results appear after about four weeks, because the body needs time to break down the dead fat cells. You see the final result after around three months. How many applications are needed depends on the body area and the size of the fat deposit: sometimes one is enough, sometimes several sessions make sense.

Frequently asked questions about cryolipolysis
What is cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive treatment in which fat cells are damaged by targeted cold and then broken down by the body. The skin and surrounding tissue remain uninjured.
Who discovered cryolipolysis?
The basis comes from two dermatologists at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Is cryolipolysis the same as CoolSculpting?
Cryolipolysis is the general term for fat reduction by cold. CoolSculpting is the device we use to carry it out at the Kuzbari Centre.
How long does cryolipolysis take?
In most cases one cycle at the Kuzbari Centre takes around 35 minutes.
How many applications are needed?
That depends on the body area and the size of the fat deposit. Sometimes a single application is enough; in other cases several sessions are needed. We will tell you at the first consultation.
How long does the result last?
With a balanced diet and regular exercise, renewed fat build-up in the treated areas is unlikely. With a considerably higher calorie intake, however, the remaining fat cells can grow again.
Is cryolipolysis safe?
With the CoolSculpting system, yes: freeze-detect technology monitors the temperature, a protective pad lies between applicator and skin, and the treatment takes place under medical supervision.
What does cryolipolysis cost?
One cycle at the Kuzbari Centre costs €370 to €550. We give you the total price after the analysis at the first consultation.
