DDr. Jessica Wittmann is a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery. At the Kuzbari Centre for Aesthetic Medicine she focuses on facial rejuvenation and nasal surgery. Facial surgery fascinated her early on as the supreme discipline of surgery: operations on the face call for the highest degree of precision and aesthetic judgement, and every step has to be weighed up on anatomical, functional and aesthetic grounds.
DDr. Wittmann completed her specialist training in oral and maxillofacial surgery in the shortest possible time, gaining a deep understanding of how the bony, cartilaginous and soft-tissue structures of the face interact and how they affect shape, appearance and function. Her degree in dentistry added further facets to that knowledge and sharpened her feeling for facial aesthetics.
The face is the most sensitive area of aesthetic surgery – what counts here is the highest precision, experience and a fine sense of harmony. DDr. Wittmann has specialised entirely in facial surgery and devotes her expertise to this one field alone. Her procedures are marked by surgical accuracy, modern techniques and natural results that preserve and underline the personality of her patients.
As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, DDr. Wittmann does not think of the nose in isolation but as part of a framework: the nasal bone, the nasal septum, the alar cartilages and the soft tissue above them together determine shape and function. Anyone who knows these layers can predict how a change to the cartilage will show on the surface months later. That is precisely the difference between a nose that still fits after a year and one that distorts.
Where the starting point is suitable, DDr. Wittmann works with the ‘dorsal preservation technique’. The natural nasal dorsum is largely preserved instead of being taken down and rebuilt. The result looks particularly harmonious and natural, and functional problems can be resolved well within the same procedure. Whether the technique is an option for your nose is shown by the examination at the initial consultation.
‘With nasal surgery in particular, and in part with eyelid surgery too, function – nasal breathing and field of vision – can often be improved considerably in the same breath, which makes aesthetic surgery a good deal more rewarding,’ DDr. Wittmann says about her work. A deviated septum or enlarged turbinates are therefore always examined during the consultation as well, even when the reason for the visit is an aesthetic one.
During her nasal operations DDr. Wittmann works with the projectometer, a sterile stainless-steel measuring instrument with a millimetre scale, an adjustable arm and a protractor. It records the two values that determine the profile of a nose: the projection of the tip — how far it stands forward — and the height of the bridge.
Before the first step she takes the baseline measurement; after every further step she measures again and compares the figure with the plan drawn up during the initial consultation on the 3D simulation. Whether the bridge has been reduced by the planned amount and the tip raised accordingly can therefore be checked in theatre. The decision still rests with the surgeon; the instrument checks it.
‘It is important to me to advise honestly and transparently. I take the time to understand exactly what my patients wish for and expect, and at the same time to explain realistically what is medically possible. Only then can we take the best decisions together.’
