Away with the dark circles! Part 1

Dark circles can be a sign of an unbalanced lifestyle, but also often an inherited predisposition to age-related tissue loss.

Dark circles and tear trough before treatment, part 1

What exactly are dark circles?

Our specialists Dr. Rafic Kuzbari and Dr. Elke Janig explain it like this:

‘What are known as the fat pads under the eyes (the fatty tissue of the lower lid) are responsible for dark circles forming. Over the years they become larger because of the loss of volume in the tissue and come more and more to the fore. As the skin under the eyes is particularly thin, the muscle beneath shimmers through in a reddish blue and the impression of a circle arises.’

After a detailed analysis of the cause of the unwanted circles, our specialists recommend the following alternatives for lasting results:

·         Lower eyelid lift

·         CO2 laser treatment

·         Autologous fat transfer

·         Hyaluronic acid treatment

·         Wrinkle treatment

In today’s blog we present the first 2 options, the lower eyelid lift and the CO2 laser treatment:

Lower eyelid lift:

Dr. Kuzbari advises this option for his patients when the loss of elasticity of the lower lid is already far advanced. You can recognise this by the lower lid fat either ‘bulging forward’ or the lower lid sphincter muscle sagging.
‘The procedure usually takes place under twilight sedation. The region is given a local anaesthetic, then a precisely placed incision is made just below the lashes of the lower lid. Through this access the bulging fatty tissue is moved towards the cheek and at the same time the slackened skin and muscle are tightened’, the specialist explains of the surgical procedure.

CO2 laser:

With the CO2 laser it is possible not only to treat the fine lines under the eyes but also to combat Dark circles. The skin is tightened and smoothed in the process.
‘After three to five repetitions a very good result can be achieved’, the dermatologist knows.

Next week in part 2 we will tell you about further eye treatments: the autologous fat transfer, the hyaluronic acid treatment and the wrinkle treatment.
