Breast augmentation: what is possible with autologous fat?
Autologous fat is in fashion. Whether Brazilian Butt Lift or injectable treatments in the face – it is said to be low-risk and long-lasting. Especially for those who have little pads of fat and would like to get rid of them, it is often a win-win situation. But how suitable is autologous fat for a breast augmentation?

Autologous fat for breast augmentation
Patients who would like a larger breast but are afraid of an implant as a ‘foreign body’ in their breast often think of an augmentation using autologous fat. With such a breast augmentation using autologous fat and without an implant there are 3 things that urgently need to be taken into account:
1. The shape of the breasts
An augmentation with autologous fat is generally only an option if the patient is completely satisfied with the shape of her breasts as such. By transplanting fat we can only add some volume. The correction of a drooping breast or other corrections are not possible.
2. Pads of fat must be present
In order to carry out a breast augmentation with autologous fat, there must in any case be enough pads of fat present beforehand which the patient would like to get rid of. That sounds logical, but there are often misunderstandings here about how much ‘fat’ is really needed. Discuss this with your treating doctor.
3. A realistic wish regarding size
An augmentation using autologous fat is possible, but never to the same extent as with an implant. So if only somewhat more volume is wanted, that is realistic. If, however, a significant enlargement is desired, or if the patient does not have enough fat reserves at all, the implant is and remains the best option.
